Summary

The varietal susceptibility of peaches to diseases caused by monilia following storage was tested using laboratory inoculation of the fruit with Monilia laxa. This method allows assessment of the susceptibility to penetration of the fungus into the fruit epidermis, and to the development of the disease in the flesh. The results obtained for nine varieties over a three-year period show a consistently homogeneous response in terms of flesh susceptibility, but a strong variability in fungal penetration into the fruit epidermis, and to the development of the disease in the flesh, due to the variability of the mechanisms that render the skin fragile.
