Performance analysis and comparison of typical reactors of a metal hydride heat pump by numerical simulation.

Author(s) : YANG F. S., WANG Y. Q., ZHANG Z. X., et al.

Summary

The metal hydride heat pump has shown great potential for energy uses, and its reactors prove crucial for smooth operation of the whole system. Thus, performance analysis and comparison of three typical reactors (including the newly proposed annulus disk type) were conducted in the paper. A non-local thermal equilibrium model was presented to describe the dynamic process in the reactors. A typical alloy LaNi5 was chosen for simulation, both compacts and powder packed metal hydride were supposed to be filled in the reactors. The simulation results show that tubular reactor has a superior performance in compacts packed condition, while performance of annulus disk reactor is very close compared with the other two reactors in powder packed condition. The annulus disk reactor can be used in large scale case and is worth studying further.
