Performance analysis of high-temperature heat pump using low quality waste heat source from marine engines.

Summary
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions from marine vessels, introducing new energy-saving technologies, such as the effective use of low-quality waste heat sources from marine engines, is essential. A high-temperature heat pump system that produces high-temperature water and steam using the unutilized low-quality waste heat from marine engines is an energy-saving technology that can help achieve "carbon neutrality" in marine vessels. In this study, the performance of a high-temperature heat pump system utilizing the exhaust heat from marine engines was analyzed using the refrigerant R245fa and its alternative low-GWP refrigerants, R1336mzz(E), R1336mzz(Z), R1233zd(E), and R1224yd(Z), as the working fluids. Furthermore, the heat transfer performance (UA-values) was investigated using a layered microchannel heat exchanger as a condenser in a high-temperature heat pump system. Consequently, R1233zd(E), which exhibits a high coefficient of performance, shows significant potential as a next-generation working fluid, although its pressure loss in the condenser is slightly higher than that of the conventional refrigerant R245fa.
