Performance and problems associated with the implementation of new refrigerants.
Author(s) : AZIZ M. A.
Summary
The paper provides a detailed survey of data for phased-out refrigerants, due to the Montreal Protocol and subsequent environmental regulations. A screening of the new family of safe, environmentally friendly, high performance substitute refrigerants for applications in manufacturing and facilities operation is reviewed. Problems arising with changes in capacities, performance, heat transfer issues, lubrication and compatibilities with various system materials are discussed. Retrofitting of an existing refrigerating system with a new refrigerant - with special emphasis on R12 to R134a conversion as a case study - is reported.
