Performance evaluation of mobile air conditioner using hydrocarbon refrigerants.

Summary
This paper presents the performance of Mobile Air-Conditioner (MAC) using HC-290 and HC-290/HC-600a as drop-in alternatives for CFC-12. The experimental setup consists of a car prototype, with an original MAC unit of CFC-12. An environmental test facility was developed to emulate the actual outside ambient conditions. A 3-phase induction motor was used to run the MAC compressor. The speed was varied by changing the frequency of induction motor through a frequency converter. The test chamber was maintained at three ambient conditions viz., 35, 40 and 45°C with a variation of plus or minus 1°C. The inside car temperature was maintained at 23 plus or minus 1°C. The effects of operating parameters, compressor speed, ambient temperature and the return air temperature on system parameters, like COP, compressor power, cooling capacity and pressure ratio were evaluated under identical conditions. Results have been compared with the CFC-12 MAC system. It has been observed that the performance of HC-290/HC-600a and CFC-12 in terms of COP and compressor power consumption and cooling capacity is almost the same. The COP with HC-290 is approximately 20% less than CFC-12.
