Summary

The performance of the ternary mixture methanol-lithium bromide-zinc bromide is evaluated by means of a numerical simulation, after a previous measurement of its thermodynamic and thermophysical properties. This mixture is not suitable for heat pump service, because of crystallization problems, but works satisfactorily in single-or double-stage heat transformers. The best performances are obtained with a mixture with the ratio 2:1 between the molar concentrations of lithium bromide and zinc bromide, operating in single-stage heat transformers. In this case heating is possible in the 60-90 deg C range, with a heat source ranging from 45 to 60 deg C; moreover, the cycle shows a good capability of self-regulation, as the heating temperature tends to drop, when the environment temperature rises from the minimum value of 1 deg C; in these operational conditions the cycle shows an exergetic efficiency of about 60%.
