Summary

Until recently, ethylene glycol (EG) had received relatively little attention as a cryoprotectant. In the paper the authors report data on the melting points, glass transition temperatures and devitrification temperatures of EG-water solutions. The authors have also determined temperature-time-transition curves, and hence critical cooling rates, which imply quite practicable cooling rates for EG concentrations that can be considered in attempts to vitrify mammalian tissues. However, critical warming rates (the minimum to avoid devitrification) present far greater practical problems.
