OPENING LECTURE HELD AT AN ITALIAN CONFERENCE ON ENERGY SAVING IN HVAC ; IT IS A BROAD INTRODUCTION TO THE TECHNICAL SUBJECTS LATER DISCUSSED. THE AUTHOR FIRST ANALYZES THE HISTORY AND PERSPECTIVES OF ENERGY DEMAND IN ITALY. ACCORDING TO THE ENERGY PLAN BY THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT, OVERALL ENERGY DEMAND IS EXPECTED TO RISE YEARLY BY 1%, BUT FOR THE ELECTRIC ENERGY, A 3% PER YEAR INCREASE IS EXPECTED. AS FOR ENERGY SAVINGS, THE EXERGY CONCEPT IS REGARDED AS AN ESSENTIAL TOOL IN THE SEARCH FOR OPTIMUM TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS. EXERGY ANALYSIS POINTS OUT COGENERATION AND HEAT PUMPS AS THE MAIN INSTRUMENTS FOR A RATIONAL USE OF ENERGY IN HEATING.
