Summary
To date, no comparable refrigerants are available for the replacement of CFC 12 in domestic refrigerating appliances; at least with reference to properties such as pressure levels, pressure ratios, non-toxicity and nonflammability. The only comparable refrigerants estimated to be applicable in the future are H-FC 134a and H-CFC 22. A number of uncertainties or disadvantages are still connected with their possible application, e.g. redesigning of the refrigerating circuit may be needed. However, domestic equipment comprises hermetically sealed systems and, therefore, the requirement of non-flammability might be changed into an acceptance of moderate inflammability. Then a somewhat broader range of possible replacements can be discussed, e.g. propane (HC 290) and isobutane (HC 600a), which have already been used in the 1920-1940 period. In this Paper an inventory is made of inflammable substitutes for CFC 12. Thermodynamic efficiencies and volumetric capacities are determined and compared. Experiments on a refrigerating appliance are described where the substitutes H-FC 152a, dimethylether and cyclopropane have been used. Under certain circumstances even a small decrease in energy consumption compared with the use of CFC 12 could be observed. The dissolution of these substitutes in the lubricating oil has not been investigated. The oil/refrigerant characteristic of the inflammable substitutes will guarantee their reliability; but this still requires further investigations. The aim of this Paper is not to propagate any standpoint but to provide data for a possible, future discussion about whether inflammable refrigerants may be used in small hermetic systems.
