Summary

SEVERAL ORGANIZATIONS HAVE RECENTLY EXAMINED ALTERNATIVES TO THE USE OF CFCS. THE < OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LABORATORY > HAS CONDUCTED A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF THE POTENTIAL IMPACT ON ENERGY USE, AND A SURVEY OF THE INDUSTRIAL REQUIREMENTS IN REEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT. THE SUBSTITUTES AVAILABLE IN THE SHORT TERM INCLUDE R22, R500, R502 AND CERTAIN MIXTURES. R134A AND R123, WHICH ARE ENVIRONMENTALLY ACCEPTABLE, SEEM PROMISING FOR NEW MATERIALS. MIXTURES OF COMPOUNDS, UNUSED UNTIL NOW, PRESENT FURTHER POSSIBILITIES. SIGNIFICANT PENALTIES MAY BE INCURRED BY THE USE OF SUBSTITUTE INSULATION MATERIALS IN APPLIANCES AND BUILDINGS. SUBSTITUTES FOR EXISTING EQUIPMENT MAY BE A MAJOR PROBLEM. COMPREHENSIVE AND ACCURATE INFORMATION ON R134A AND R123 IS URGENTLY REQUIRED.
