PRACTICAL TECHNIQUES FOR COOLING BIOLOGICAL SAMPLES AT 0.3-100 K/MIN.

Summary
THE RATE OF HEAT TRANSFER FROM A LIQUID MEDIUM THAT SURROUNDED THE SAMPLES, INTO LIQUID NITROGEN, WAS VARIED BY CHANGING THE INSULATING PROPERTIES OF THE CONTAINER WALL. THIS WAS ACHIEVED BY USING EVACUATED OR UNEVACUATED DEWAR FLASKS, AND BY SHUNTING THE VACUUM OR AIR JACKET BY VARIOUS MATERIALS OF HIGHER CONDUCTIVITY. THE MOST RAPID COOLING RATES WERE OBTAINED BY VARYING THE SIZE OF SINGLE-WALLED GLASS VESSELS. ALMOST THE ENTIRE RANGE, FROM 0.3 TO 100 K/MIN, WAS COVERED.
