Precooling of berries in the field with a new packaging system.

Author(s) : TESTONI A., LOVATI F.

Summary

A new packaging system is tested for fast precooling in the field and as a cold source during the marketing step of berries. Icepack is a modular system of polystyrene layers containing baskets of fruit and layers of frozen water as source of cold, that can be piled up in different sequences. Trials with strawberries, wild strawberries and raspberries (summer production) show the capability of the "Icepack modulus" to drop the temperature of about 15 deg C in 4-5 hours and also to maintain the temperature of the berries below 10 deg C for 24 hours. This system, as compared to the traditional packaging without cooling, is able to double the shelf-life of the berries.
