Field precooling of small fruit with "Icepack".

Summary
The polystyrene modular Icepack system, which is composed of layers of small fruit baskets alternated with ice layers, permits optimum control of temperature at harvest and during the subsequent period of marketing, provided that ice is changed when necessary (approx. every 24 hours). The trials show that the pack can limit weight loss (0.7% after 2 days), rot development (4-5% in strawberries and raspberries after 2 days, 15% in wild strawberries) and fruit senescence so as to maintain a brighter colour and a fresher aspect than fruits in traditional baskets.
