PREVENTION OF COMMON APPLE SCALD BY ULTRA-LOW OXYGEN.

TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON STORAGE IN AN ULTRALOW OXYGEN ATMOSPHERE (0.5% O2 AND 0.5% CO2 ) OF 4 APPLE CULTIVARS: GOLDEN DELICIOUS, IMPERATORE, GRANNY SMITH AND STAYMAN, IN ORDER TO CHECK THE POSSIBLE PREVENTION OF COMMON SCALD. EXCELLENT RESULTS WERE OBTAINED WITH ALL CULTIVARS AS REGARDS SCALD, ALTHOUGH THE OCCURRENCEOF LOW-OXYGEN INJURY WAS OBSERVED IN IMPERATORE, GRANNY SMITH AND STAYMAN CULTIVARS.
