Summary

The booklet examines how to improve the protection and rational use of water biological resources for the purpose of preserving biodiversity, not only of species of considerable commercial value, but also of species characteristic of the given region. Measures are listed for protecting aquatic ecosystems from harmful anthropogenic impacts, for rejuvenating degraded water bodies, as well as for creating new aquatic ecosystems and forming productive hydrobiocenoses in them. Special attention is paid to the necessity of setting up national and international systems of low-temperature genetic hydrobiont banks, a new approach to solving the problems of preservation and stable utilisation of biodiversity.
