Process cooling CO2 chillers: field experience and performance-cost comparisons with other natural refrigerants and HFC/Os.
Number: 0045
Author(s) : PISANO G.
Summary
CO2 has been identified as an excellent alternative to HFC/Os in many refrigeration sectors, this thanks to its environment benign features and high performance levels in many applications. However, industry is still concerned about its use in some domains, with higher capital costs and lower energy efficiency being sometimes considered as limiters in this sense.
This work describes a performance and basic cost comparison between various executions of a process cooling chiller featuring 500 kW refrigeration capacity: several refrigerants are taken into consideration and the relevant performance are calculated within a yearly scenario and referring to various EU climate profiles, these including HFC/Os, propane, ammonia and CO2. Examples and real life experience of similar CO2 chillers sizes already successfully in operation are also described.
Calculation results show that thanks to appropriate enhancements to the standard refrigeration cycle, such as the use of ejectors and adiabatic cooling, CO2 chillers are able to provide same yearly efficiency levels to the other technologies, this being valid for any EU climate profile.
Basic cost comparison shows that CO2 chillers are still involving higher capital expenditures, however this could easily be mitigated when a more widespread usage of such technology will be in place.
Field experience shows that calculated CO2 chiller performance, mainly based on compressors polynomials, can be matched on site with reasonable accuracy, this providing consistency with the theoretical performance comparison between the described solutions.
