Summary
Considering the technology presently used and the equipment produced in large numbers, propane (R290) is presently an excellent choice. COPs of propane are higher than that of R22. A further advantage of R290 is the low discharge temperature; internal heat exchanger can be used to improve both efficiency and capacity, even high temperature lifts can be realized with one-stage systems. The only problem of R290 is flammability. However the danger caused by propane equipment is relatively low. Nevertheless regulations have to be adapted.
