Propane, an alternative coolant for heat pumps?

Author(s) : IEA HPC, RODECKER H.

Summary

The author reports on an installed volume of approximately 200 propane heat pumps in the nominal heating power range between 12 and 50 kilowatts. Until now there were no failures or problems of any kind with the used coolant propane. The annual operation figures measured at air-water propane heat pumps in practical use have been above 3. So far this has not been possible to achieve with serial models of air-water heat pumps. Since spring 1994, speed-controlled propane heat pumps have been offered for outdoor installation. Water-water, brine-water and air-water heat pumps for indoor use will also be converted to propane at a later date.
