Refrigerant charge, pressure drop, and condensation heat transfer in flattened tubes.

Author(s) : WILSON M. J., NEWELL T. A., CHATO J. C., et al.

Summary

The purpose of the study was to explore the refrigerant side flow characteristics inside flattened tubes. Some of the findings for flat tubes are: significant reduction in refrigerant mass; pressure drop results scale with hydraulic diameter; microfin pressure drop effects can be modelled with equivalent roughness factors; very high heat transfer enhancement in microfin tubes. The downside of flattening a tube is the increased pressure drop penalty. For practical applications, heat exchanger and system manufacturers must take into account more detailed economic considerations.
