Summary

Two products stand out as R22 retrofit candidates: R407C and a new blend consisting of R125, R134a and isobutane (47, 50 and 4%). The performance of R407C and the blend were measured using the same open drive reciprocating compressor operating at the same speed as in the R22 system. In efficiency terms, R407C and the blend are broadly equivalent to each other, both refrigerants being about 6%, less efficient than R22. However, the blend had a cooling capacity more than 20% lower than R22 for all three air conditioning test conditions. Heating capacity was also lower than R22 when the unit was in heat pump mode. In comparison, the cooling capacity for R407C was much closer to R22, and exceeded that of R22 in heat pump mode.
