REFRIGERATED PORT FACILITIES FOR TRANS-SHIPMENT OF PERISHABLES.

Author(s) : HUNTER D. L.

Summary

A HEALTHY EXPORT MARKET MUST BE BASED ON MAINTAINING FRUIT QUALITY AT COMPETITIVE PRICES. CONTAINERIZED SHIPMENT OF FRESH FRUIT IS USUALLY MORE EXPENSIVE FOR MOST PRODUCTS SUCH AS APPLES, PEARS, BANANAS AND IS OFTEN PUT IN REFRIGERATED CHARTER SHIPS. SAFEGUARDING QUALITY MUST START AT THE VERY BEGINNING IN THE PACKING HOUSES TO THE DOCK WHERE FACILITIES MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR RAPID UNLOADING OF LARGE VOLUMES OF FRUIT. TO HANDLE LARGE VOLUMES OF FRUIT, CONSIDERATION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO MULTIPLE PALLET LOAD HANDLING.
