Summary

With income falling from traditional productions (cacao, coffee, wood, etc.) and from the exploitation of mineral resources (especially petroleum), and with the weight of the debt burdening their economies, developing countries are being led to develop new activities. These countries are also being faced with hunger and malnutrition, among other serious problems. Refrigeration can help improve food resources by preserving locally available perishable foodstuff; by allowing exports of vegetable products, meats and sea products, which are of high market value; by promoting tourism; and by improving sanitary conditions. The questions posed for developing countries, and which will be examined by the author, are: Can refrigerating equipment be supported economically? Can refrigeration promote a country's economic growth? Is refrigeration a factor in social progress and in maintaining health? If so, what are the financial, technical and social obstacles to be overcome? What are the arguments in favour of adopting refrigerating technology?
