THE PAPER DESCRIBES THE REFRIGERATING SYSTEMS OF AN ITALIAN MULTI-PURPOSE FOOD PROCESSING CENTRE. THE REFRIGERATED VOLUMES, MAINTAINED AT DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES, AMOUNT TO 110,000 M3. THE FOODSTUFFS STORED ARE FRUIT, VEGETABLES, MEAT OF VARIOUS KINDS AND DAIRY PRODUCTS. DIFFERENT REFRIGERATING SYSTEMS ARE USED FOR DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS AND TEMPERATURES. WATER CHILLING PACKAGED UNITS WITH CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSORS AND LITHIUM BROMIDE ABSORPTION UNITS ARE USED FOR AIR CONDITIONING OFFICES. DIRECT EXPANSION AND SECONDARY REFRIGERANT SYSTEMS WITH SINGLE-STAGE RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS ARE USED FOR FRESH FOODSTUFF STORAGE AND PROCESSING, AND DIRECT EXPANSION SYSTEMS WITH COMPOUND RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS FOR THE FREEZING AND STORAGE OF FROZEN FOODSTUFFS.
