Summary

IT IS WELL ESTABLISHED THAT SOME PHYSIOLOGICAL DISORDERS SUCH AS BITTER PIT AND INTERNAL BROWNING IN SEVERAL APPLE CULTIVARS ARE LINKED TO TROUBLES IN THE MINERAL COMPOSITION OF FRUIT TISSUES AND THAT THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF FRUIT TO EXTERNAL AGGRESSIONS AND TO FUNGAL ATTACKS DEPEND ON ITS NITROGEN AND MINERAL CONTENTS. THE AUTHOR BRIEFLY SURVEYS THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN FRUIT COMPOSITION AND THE MAIN GROUPS OF DETERIORATION FACTORS. HE DISCUSSES LONG-TERM TEST DATA AND RECENT PINPOINT OBSERVATIONS, HE GIVES USEFUL ADVICE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF GROWING TECHNIQUES IN THE ORCHARD.
