Remarks on the use of ammonia in air-conditioning systems.

Summary
Considering its use in HVAC chiller applications, ammonia must compete with established synthetic refrigerants like e.g. R407C on the one hand and hydrocarbons like propane, isobutane and propene on the other. This paper presents an assessment of ammonia's potential use in air-conditioning systems for selected capacities and criteria. Thermodynamical and ecological properties are compared and potential risks are valuated regarding current European regulations. COPs and economical aspects are discussed.
