Risk assessment and standards survey for use of flammable refrigerants in transport refrigeration applications.

Summary
Applications of transport refrigeration include refrigerated boxes, truck & trailers, reefer containers, rail cars, marine refrigeration and air transport. Transport refrigeration systems have significantly higher demand regarding the robustness of the refrigeration system than stationary refrigeration systems. For this reason, the selection of alternative refrigerants requires special care on the suitability of the working fluids, components and the overall system as well as the risks associated with the use of the refrigerant in all its different operational modes over the lifetime of the transport unit. In the present work, a risk assessment method for flammable refrigerants, defined in ISO 817 as class A2 (R152a, R32, R1234yf) and A3 (R290, R1270) will be presented. Furthermore, the results of a standard survey for safety requirements will be discussed. The survey is based on a research of national and international standards with relevance for safety of refrigeration systems in the transport refrigeration sector. Based on the analysis of the risk assessment for the cold room measures to reduce the probability of high refrigerant concentrations due to leak events are derived. Furthermore, exemplary results of a comprehensive risk management method using the “operational mode risk assessment” over the lifetime are discussed. The analysis of safety requirements in international standards show that a safe operation with flammable refrigerants in transport refrigeration systems can be interpreted as covered and therefore assessed as possible for the majority of operating conditions and systems. The overall result shows that the use of flammable refrigerants from group A2 and A3 in the application considered here can be realized assuming that a deep investigation of risks from the operational modes combined with the intended and so called foreseeable use has been done.
