Safe use of HCFC alternatives in refrigeration and air-conditioning: higher toxicity refrigerants.
Author(s) : ONU Environnement (ex-PNUE)
Type of article: Periodical article
Summary
With the advancing worldwide phase out of HCFCs, UNEP’s OzonAction Division of Technology has produced a series of factsheets on the safe use of the new alternatives. There is primarily one alternative refrigerant that is of higher toxicity, ammonia (or R717). It is flammable as well as being higher toxicity. Another important consideration for ammonia is that is a powerful corrosive chemical and has an affinity for moisture.
