Summary

R69S IS A BLEND OF R22, R218, AND R290. IT IS NOT AN AZEOTROPE BUT, BECAUSE THE THREE COMPONENTS HAVE SIMILAR BOILING POINTS, IT BEHAVES IN A NEAR-AZEOTROPIC MANNER. TESTS INDICATE THAT R69S CAN BE USED AS A DIRECT SUBSTITUTE FOR R502. TRIALS AT A SUPERMARKET WITH TWO IDENTICAL 9 KILOWATT SEMI-HERMETIC SYSTEMS SHOWED VERY SIMILAR OPERATION BETWEEN ONE WITH R502 AND ONE USING THE REFRIGERANT ONLY REPLACED WITH R69S. NO OIL CHANGE WAS NEEDED, ALTHOUGH R69S FLUSHED SOME EXCESS OIL LEFT IN THE EVAPORATOR BY R502. IN RETROFITS, EXPANSION VALVES WILL REQUIRE SLIGHT RESETTING, AND IN SOME CASES REPLACING. R69S IS IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE AND HAS A MUCH LOWER OZONE DEPLETION FACTOR THAN R502. BECAUSE OF ITS R22 COMPONENT IT MUST BE REGARDED AS AN INTERIM ALTERNATIVE. D.W.H.
