SAFER REFRIGERANTS: THE ABSORPTION OPTION.

Summary

THE AUTHOR REMINDS US THAT ABSORPTION REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS USEPRIMARY ENERGY DIRECTLY RATHER THAN INDIRECTLY AS THROUGH AN ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVE FOR COMPRESSION SYSTEMS. THIS CAN ALMOST COMPLETELY COMPENSATE FOR THE LOW ABSORPTION COP. MORE PARTICULARLY IN THE APPLICATION OF COMBINED HEAT AND POWER, WHERE IT IS POSSIBLE TO USE AN ENGINE DRIVEN GENERATOR TO PROVIDE ELECTRICITY TOGETHER WITH ALMOST NO-COST HEATING IN WINTER AND ABSORPTION COOLING IN SUMMER. WITH REFRIGERANTS HAVING NO OZONE DEPLETION OR GLOBAL WARMING CHARACTERISTICS, THE ABSORPTION SYSTEM SHOULD BE CONSIDERED. D.W.H.
