COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE FRENCH MARKET FOR IMPORTED SALMON (WHICH INCREASED FROM 33,000 TONNES IN 1986 TO 51,000 TONNES IN 1989, OF WHICH 33,000 TONNES ARE FRESH AND 18,000 ARE FROZEN), ITS ORIGIN: ATLANTIC, WITH NORWAY PROVIDING 53% OF IMPORTS (MAINLY FARMED SALMON OF A UNIQUE SPECIES, EITHER FRESH, SMOKED OR FROZEN) AND NORTH PACIFIC, WHICH, AFTER THE 80'S, WHEN THE DOLLAR WAS EXPENSIVE, TOOK OVER 17% OF THE FRENCH IMPORT MARKET (5 WILD SPECIES MAINLY FROZEN). THE ADVANTAGES OF BOTH REGIONS ARE REVIEWED, AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE MARKET FOR DIFFERENT CUTS OF SALMON IS DISCUSSED. J.R.
