Summary

Flaked ice is the only type of ice which lends itself to large scale storage (the term flaked ice stands for a maximum thickness of 4.5 mm for a surface of 10 cm2). Its production should be adapted to the potential needs of the user. If the consumption is regular, it would be desirable to limit the amount stored, according to the formula given in the article. It is now possible to buy horizontal, automatic extraction silos, smaller than the vertical systems existing since the 50's, but more delicate to run. The recent orbital system presents many practical advantages and has spread rapidly for small storage capacities. Its flexibility allows easy adaptation to changes in production.
