Synthetic and natural refrigerants: recent developments.

Author(s) : SPATZ M., VINK T. G. A.

Summary

In response to regulatory requirements, notably in the EU and California, a new class of synthetic fluids is in development to meet concerns over the relatively high GWP values of the current refrigerants in use. This article compares data on these synthetic low GWP fluids with those for fluids categorised as "natural refrigerants". Physico-chemical and thermodynamic properties, environmental footprint, safety, economic and performance characteristics are considered.
