Summary

Previous studies of unsteady natural convection at an ice-forming surface have been by interferometers detecting changes in density and refractive index. As variations of these in water are very small below 40 deg C, the authors have explored a visualization technique using a chiral nematic type of liquid crystal with a wide colour change over small temperature change in the region required. The results are encouraging and indicate a definite change from clockwise to anti-clockwise movement at the interface, showing clearly the period of density inversion. D.W.H.
