The application of heat pump in low temperature drying.

Summary

During the last 4-5 years heat pumps in combination with fluid bed dryers have been investigated extensively at the Norwegian Institute of Technology. A laboratory plant was constructed and a series of drying experiments on different types of temperature-sensible products were carried out. By using a heat pump, the temperature and relative humidity of a drying agent can be regulated from -20 to 50 deg C and from 20 to 90% correspondingly. This gives possibilities to dry at both temperatures below and above 0 deg C atmospherically, or by combinations of different drying temperatures which are called temperature programs. Results show that the physical properties of food products, like density, rehydration ability and colour, can be regulated by using the temperature programs and the biological activity of biotechnological products can be improved by low temperature drying (lower than 50 deg C), compared to traditional drying methods.
