The benefits of computational fluid dynamics for modelling processes in the cold chain.

Author(s) : FOSTER A. M.

Summary

The benefit of CFD to the refrigeration industry is difficult to quantify. On one hand the distributors and writers of CFD code would have us believe that it is the answer to all our problems. On the other hand some users of CFD have found it difficult to use and frequently get the wrong answers. This paper tries to give an impartial view of the advantages of CFD whilst also showing its drawbacks. In this study, CFD has proved to be an invaluable tool for modelling processes in the cold chain. However, it is only a partial replacement for practical experimentation (see also IIR Bulletin, ref. 2000-0506).
