THE AUTHOR REVIEWS THE HISTORY OF IRRADIATION OF FOOD, NOTABLY THE TRIALS CARRIED OUT BY THE US ARMY. SIDE EFFECTS FROM IRRADIATED FOOD FED TO ANIMALS OVER A LONG PERIOD GAVE RISE TO CONCERN AND EXPERIMENTS WITH PLANT TISSUES SHOWED THAT RADIATION COULD BE TRANSFERRED FROM ONE PLANT SYSTEM TO ANOTHER. RESEARCH WORKERS HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THERE HAS BEEN NO CHANGE IN THEIR FINDINGS OVER THE PAST 15 YEARS AND THE QUESTION OF SAFE IRRADIATION IS STILL OPEN. THE NATIONAL FISHERIES INSTITUTE IN WISHING TO IRRADIATE FRESH FISH APPEARED TO BE CLAIMING RESULTS WHICH WERE UNSUBSTANTIATED, PARTICULARLY AT HIGH LEVELS OF IRRADIATION. G.R.S.
