The current trends in research and development on phase change material slurry.

Author(s) : INABA H.

Summary

The paper presents the status of research and development on phase change slurries, which consist of a mixture of heat transfer medium like water and other phase change material like a paraffin wax. This type of phase change slurry offers attractive opportunities for thermal energy storage, thermal energy transportation and heat transfer enhancement of heat exchanger as a secondary refrigerant. The article describes the classification, heat transfer and hydrodynamic characteristics of some phase change slurries like ice slurry, phase change micro-emulsion slurry, phase change microcapsule slurry, clathrate or hydrate slurry, shape-stabilized paraffin and polyethylene pellets etc. as a secondary refrigerant using latent heat between solid and liquid phases.
