Summary

The average demand for hot tap water is about 1/3rd of the total final residential energy consumption in Japan, and the direct combustion system using fossil fuel covers almost all of its demand. Therefore, the development of a high-performance heat pump water heater is required on the market from an energy saving viewpoint. Under such circumstances, a CO2 refrigerant heat pump hot water heater system for residential usage was developed and commercialized in 2001. The system requires advanced technologies such as high performance compressor, high performance heat exchanger and optimized high side pressure control method for transcritical CO2 refrigerant cycle. The author then developed and commercialized a new-generation heat pump with an ejector cycle in 2003.
