THE DUCTILITY OF MAMMALIAN TISSUE IN DEPENDENCE ON THE DEFORMATION TEMPERATURE.

Author(s) : THOM F.

Type of article: Article

Summary

DEFORMATION MEASUREMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON TISSUE-STRIPS OF HEART MUSCLE AND SAMPLES OF THE SMALL INTESTINE OF RATS. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT LOW TEMPERATURE REDUCES THE STRAIN VALUES ON TISSUE AND THAT DMSO INCREASES THEM. AFTER CRYO-PROTECTION OF THE TISSUE WITH 25% DMSO THE DUCTILITY IS ADEQUATE TO COMPENSATE THE VOLUME INCREASE OF WHOLE ORGANS DURING FREEZING.
