THE ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES OF LEGISLATION IN THE COLD CHAIN IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.

Author(s) : WOOLFE M.

Summary

IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, THERE IS NO LEGISLATION CONCERNING FROZEN FOODSTUFFS APART FROM THE GENERAL PROVISIONS OF THE 1984 ACTAND THOSE OF OTHER SPECIFIC ACTS RELATED TO LABELLING AND ADDITIVES. IF THE DRAFT EC QUICK FROZEN FOODS DIRECTIVE IS IMPLEMENTED IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, THESE PRODUCTS WILL HAVE TO BE MAINTAINED AT A TEMPERATURE EQUAL OR LESS THAN A MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE DURING DISTRIBUTION. BUT, DISPLAY CABINETS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM CANNOT SATISFY THIS MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE. THE ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES IN TERMS OF AMORTIZATION OF THE COST OF NEW DISPLAY UNITS ARE CONSIDERABLE. THE MARGINAL IMPROVEMENT IN STORAGE LIFE GAINED BY THIS COST WOULD HAVE TO BE WEIGHED AGAINST THE INCREASED COST PASSED ON TO THE CONSUMER.
