Summary

THE TRANSPORTATION IN QUESTION IS A PART OF A RESEARCH PROJECT ON THE TRANSPORT AND DISTRIBUTION OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES BY MEANS OF CONTAINERS SPONSORED BY THE NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL OF ITALY. THE PAPER GIVES DETAILED INFORMATION ON THE ITINERARY AND ON THE TECHNIQUES USED FOR THE PRESERVATION AND TRANSPORTATION OF THE FRUIT. THE DURATION OF THE TRIP WAS FROM 30TH SEPTEMBER TO 23RD OCTOBER 1979: THE FRUIT, PLACED INTO TWO 20' REFRIGERATED ISO CONTAINERS, WERE CARRIED BY TRAIN FROM CATANIA TO LIVORNO, BY SHIP FROM LIVORNO TO NEW YORK AND BY TRUCK FROM NEW YORK TO MONTREAL. THE GRAPE BOXES WERE PROTECTED WITH INDIVIDUAL WRAPS OF POLYETHYLENE FILM IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THE SO2 CONCENTRATION AT THE REQUIRED LEVEL IN ORDER TO PREVENT MOULD ATTACK: THE CONDITION OF THE FRUITS ON ARRIVAL WERE ALMOST PERFECT. SPECIAL CARE WAS DEVOTED TO THE AIR CIRCULATION SYSTEM, ESPECIALLY TO OBTAIN UNIFORM DISTRIBUTION ; FOR THIS TEMPERATURES IN THE CARGO IN BOTH CONTAINERS WERE MEASURED AT SEVERAL POINTS BY MEANS OF THERMOCOUPLES CONTROLLED BY A DATA LOGGER.
