Summary

The influx of new refrigerants entering the market increases the complexity of the challenging process of recovering and reclaiming refrigerants. Today, the majority of reclaimers use conventional distillation that facilitates the removal of impurities from used refrigerants in order to meet AHRI Standard 700 so they can be re-sold. However, many commonly used high GWP refrigerants mixtures will need to be separated into their component parts to be efficiently re-used in HFO refrigerant blends or as fluorinated feedstocks. This is complicated by the fact that many refrigerant mixtures form azeotropes and conventional separation techniques are unable to separate them. With over 850,000,000 kilograms of refrigerant in use for vapor compression systems, it is imperative that technology to separate azeotropic refrigerant mixtures is developed to prevent refrigerants from being incinerated or vented.
This presentation will discuss the first use of a pilot scale extractive distillation column to separate azeotropic refrigerant mixtures using ionic liquid as the entrainer. This new separation technology provides the opportunity to add value to recovered refrigerant mixtures, incentivize recovery and reclaim, and offer a source of refrigerants to the market that would otherwise be unavailable.
