The future of HFCs as refrigeration working fluids.

Il futuro degli HFC come fluidi nella refrigerazione./ The future of HFCs as refrigeration working fluids.

Author(s) : MORLEY J.

Summary

With the phase-out of ozone depleting substances, the refrigeration industry had to expend a significant effort in finding and developing the use of non-ODS replacements. The long-held industry requirements of safety, stability and appropriate thermophysical properties led to the adoption of HFCs as replacements for CFCs and HCFCs. With the realization that HFCs are "greenhouse gases" an extensive evaluation of low GWP fluids for refrigeration use has begun. Traditional (pre-CFC) fluids are being reintroduced in spite of their practical drawbacks (generally safety issues), however it is apparent that they will not replace HFCs in all applications. The paper summarizes the outcome of the search for fluids belonging to hitherto untried chemical families.
