The future of postharvest fumigants.
Author(s) : TAYLOR R. W. D.
Type of article: Article
Summary
No alternative fumigants with the particular properties of methyl bromide are currently available although the use of phosphine is expected to increase where possible to replace methyl bromide. Several other gases are being evaluated as potential alternative fumigants but, even if any were found suitable, it is unlikely they would reach the commercial market for 5 to 10 years. The development of other, non-chemical, methods of insect control is expected be the major thrust of many research programmes well into the next century and it seems likely that the employment of chemical fumigants will gradually decline.
