Summary

Apple cultivars Idared, Cacanska Pozna, Jonagold and Melrose were stored at 1 deg C and 85-90% relative humidity, either in a controlled atmosphere (below 7% CO2, 7% O2) or under normal atmospheric conditions. Weight losses due to decay were negligible in controlled atmosphere and those due to transpiration were also considerably lower than under normal atmospheric conditions. Fruits stored in controlled atmosphere exhibited no physiological disorder whereas bitter pit was observed on cv. Melrose under normal atmospheric conditions.
