Summary

GOLDEN DELICIOUS APPLES WERE TREATED ACCORDING TO A FACTORIAL DESIGN WITH: A) HYDROCOOLING OR AIR COOLING ; B) TREATMENT WITH 13.5% CO2 AND 3-4% O2 AT 273 K (0 DEG C) FOR 13 DAYS BEFORE STORAGE, OR IMMEDIATE STORAGE, OR DELAYED STORAGE ; C) STORAGE IN NORMAL OR CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE. CO2 TREATMENT ENHANCED THE EFFECTS OF CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE (FRUIT WERE GREENER AND FIRMER THAN THOSE UNTREATED) ; WITH DELAYED STORAGE ON THE CONTRARY, THE ADVANTAGE OF CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE CO2 TREATED FRUIT WAS REDUCED TO ZERO AND THOSE STORED IN NORMAL ATMOSPHERE WERE ONLY FIRMER THAN THOSE UNTREATED. HYDROCOOLED FRUIT WERE MORE ELASTIC THAN AIR-COOLED ONES.
