Summary

According to an analysis of the onion subsector in Niger, Benin, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast, carried out from April 1994 to July 1995, those involved in this subsector have different and sometimes even contradictory quality criteria, depending on their objectives and interests: producers try to grow large bulbs, while merchants mainly look for small onions that can better withstand storage and shipping. Both socio-economic and "socio-qualitative" relations are involved.
