The realisation of prescribed climatic conditions in refrigerated containers for flower bulbs.

Author(s) : RUDOLPHIJ J. W., WANG H.

Summary

For the transportation of flower bulbs from Europe to USA and Canada reefer containers have been used for many years. The extending trade to the Pacific and Far East area means that reefers more often have to pass tropical area's. Flower bulbs, in particular tulip bulbs, demand a low ethylene and moisture level inside a container box, in addition to temperature requirements. To maintain a low ethylene level ample ventilation (air renewal) is used. This interferes with also present humidity control systems and can cause overload problems. The aim of the research project is to advise on new directions for ventilation requirements for flower bulb transportation or to advise on the use of other systems for the removal of produced ethylene. A case study in discussed.
