Summary

Temperature management is important in breweries. In particular for the manufacturing of bottom-fermented Bavarian types of beer, cooling is an absolute necessity. Till the 80's of the last century the brewers used big quantities of natural ice. The development and introduction of artificial refrigeration, the most successful machines were the compression-type manufactured by Linde, had a great impact on the brewing industry. These technological changes and their effects are described, with an accent on the brewing industry in the Netherlands.
