Summary

CHANGES IN LIFESTYLE HAVE RESULTED IN A WIDE VARIETY OF CONVENIENCE FOODS WHICH HAVE ALTERED THE NATURE OF THE FOOD SUPPLY OPERATION. THIS HAS RESULTED IN COMPLICATIONS SUCH AS ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION AND A GREATER NEED FOR REFRIGERATION, PROPER STORAGE TEMPERATURES AND ADEQUATE QUALITY CONTROL. THE VARIOUS STANDARDS SUCH AS CODEX ALIMENTARIUS ARE REVIEWED, AND THEIR IMPACT TOGETHER WITH QUALITY CONTROL, HEALTH AND CONSUMER STANDARDS ARE DISCUSSED AT LENGTH. THE ROLE OF FAO AND MEMBER GOVERNMENTS IN VARIOUS PROGRAMMES IS DETAILED, IN PARTICULAR FUTURE NEEDS SUCH AS A NATIONAL FOOD CONTROL SYSTEM. G.R.S.
